Poe knew this playing with the existing hysteria around scientific experiments and affecting his own clinical tone, he successfully fooled readers, who couldn’t tell whether the story was fiction or fact. Titled as a medical report and placed between nonfiction essays on the Whig party and the “anti-rent” movement, contemporary readers had no definitive way to index its genre.
